In the late 1980s, Czech computer technology innovators Eduard Kucera and Pavel Baudis developed a program they called “anti-virus advanced set” (AVAST). Later, they realized the serendipity of ‘avast’ being also an English-language nautical term meaning “stop!” – as they would eventually develop their vision into one of the world’s top-ranked antivirus softwares.
