Avast BackUp: FAQ - Restoring

Avast BackUp FAQ - Restoring
Where can I find the Web Restore?

You can restore files for the web, which is especially useful in the event of a large data loss by logging in to your user account via this URL:

How do I restore my files from the Web?

We recommend that you read the Avast help file which details exactly how to restore individual or all of your files from the web. You can find the help file here:

I'm trying to restore, but it keeps sitting at the Loading backup screen. Why?

It sounds like your backup is too large for Internet Explorer. You need to use another browser. We recommend using for example Mozilla Firefox. It's free and works exceptionally well with the Avast BackUp restore system. You can download it at:

Where do I put my restored files for common applications?

When you perform a restore from within Avast BackUp, it usually automatically restores files to their original locations. Often, when people restore data for commonly used programs, such as Microsoft Outlook files, they don't know where they should restore the files to. Most of the time, where you restore the files is not important. You can restore the files anywhere the application has access.

For instructions on where you need to restore your data for a particular software package, refer to the documentation for that product.

Most of the time, you have to point the application to the location where the file was restored. Programs often have a File > Open menu to open files that are needed for the application. When you restore your files, you can click File > Open and point the application to the location where you restored the files.

How do I change the date for the files I want to restore

When you restore files from the client restore, you have the option of selecting the date of the files and folders you want to restore.

  1. In the drop-down menus in the top-right corner of the page, select the date and time that correspond to the backup you want to restore.

  2. Once you have selected a date, select the files and folders you want to restore.

Note:
If you already selected some files and folders, you need to select them again.

7-Zip Diagnostic Window

When you try to unzip your downloaded files using Windows, the 7-Zip diagnostic window appears, stating that a certain number of files couldn't be opened.

This is usually caused by Windows having troubles with long file names. The total length of the file name needs to be less than 256 characters.

To resolve the problem:

  1. Download and install the 7-Zip application. You can download 7-Zip at:

  2. Once you have installed 7-Zip, extract the files using 7-Zip instead of the Windows default extraction utility.

  3. Extract the files from the root directory. For example:

     C:\

    ...instead of default:

     C:\Documents and Settings\~username~\My Documents\

"Not a valid win32 application error" appears

If you receive a error message stating "Not a valid win32 application", it usually means the files have not download fully.

To resolve the problem:

  1. Use a browser with a download manager such as Mozilla Firefox or standalone download manager Flashget to download the files. You can download Flashget at:

  2. When prompted to Save or Run the download files, make sure you select to Save the file'. This allows the file to download completely before you attempt to open the file.
