avast! SecureLine: Enable the Remote Access Connection Manager service

Why I haven't the option to create a virtual private network (VPN) connection?

If the option to create a virtual private network (VPN) connection is not available in Windows XP Professional, you may not have the Remote Access Connection Manager service running.

How to determine if the Remote Access Connection Manager service is running?

To determine if the Remote Access Connection Manager service is running on your computer, follow the directions below:

  1. From the Start menu, select either 'Control Panel', or 'Settings' and then 'Control Panel'.

  2. Double-click 'Administrative Tools', and then double-click 'Services'.

  3. Locate 'Remote Access Connection Manager' in the list of services.

  4. In the "Status" column, if the word "Started" does not appear, then the service is not running, and you will need to enable it (follow the directions below).

Note:
The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the Telephony service to also be running. Locate 'Telephony' in the list, and see if it also shows the word "Started" under "Status". If not, you must enable that service as well (follow the directions below).

How to enable the Remote Access Connection Manager service?

To enable the Remote Access Connection Manager (or also Telephony), follow these steps:

  1. From the Start menu, select either 'Control Panel', or 'Settings' and then 'Control Panel'.

  2. Double-click 'Administrative Tools', and then double-click 'Services'.

  3. Locate 'Remote Access Connection Manager' (or also 'Telephony', if enabling it) in the list of services.

  4. Double-click 'Remote Access Connection Manager' (or also 'Telephony', if enabling it).

  5. In the resulting dialog box, in the drop-down list next to "Startup type:", choose 'Automatic' (this will make the service automatically start whenever you turn on your computer).

  6. In the "Service status:" section, click 'Start'.

  7. Click 'OK', and then close the Services control panel.

The option to create a VPN connection should now be available.
