How to install Avast Small Office Administration?

Avast Small Office Administration is a web-based console with remote management capability, which allows you to discover new and unsecured machines on the company network, centrally deploy and manage Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients) and incremental updates on all your computers and/or servers to keep your network free of viruses and other malware, schedule scan jobs, receive real-time security alerts, reports and automatic notifications about the activity on your network. Avast Small Office Administration is suitable for small and simple computer networks with up to 200 computers and/or servers, and so it's simple to use and has only one-level grouping of Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients). The following system requirements are recommended in order to install and run Avast Small Office Administration:

  • Microsoft Windows XP (any Edition with the latest Service Pack 3),
    Microsoft Windows Vista (any Edition with the latest Service Pack, 32-bit or 64-bit, except Starter Edition),
    Microsoft Windows 7 (any Edition with the latest Service Pack, 32-bit or 64-bit),
    Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (any Edition with the latest Service Pack, 32-bit or 64-bit, incl. Small Business Server),
    Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 (any Edition with latest Service Pack, 32-bit or 64-bit, incl. Small Business Server),
    Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (any Edition with latest Service Pack, 32-bit or 64-bit, incl. Small Business Server, except Server Core),
    Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 (any Edition with latest Service Pack, 32-bit or 64-bit, incl. Small Business Server, except Server Core),
    Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2011.

  • Silverlight 5 enabled web browser (Internet Explorer 6.x and higher or compatible alternatives).

  • Internet connection (to download and register the product, and for updates of the Mirror from the AVAST update server).

  • Domain network or Windows workgroup membership.

  • Valid and reachable SMTP Server.

  • Intel Pentium III compatible processor or above (depends on the requirements of used operating system version and other 3rd party software installed).

  • 1 GB RAM or above (depends on the requirements of used operating system version and other 3rd party software installed).

  • 900 MB of free hard disk space.

  • Optimally standard screen resolution not less than 1024 x 768 pixels.

Note:
Avast Small Office Administration is not supported (is not compatible, cannot be installed and won't run) on DOS, Microsoft Windows 3.x, Microsoft Windows NT 3.x, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Windows 2000, or any other operating systems which aren't specified as supported.

Other 3rd party prerequisites will be installed during the setup by the installer if they are not present. These are the Microsoft .NET Framework 4, Microsoft Silverlight 5 and other dependencies like Microsoft Windows Installer, etc.

Installation of Avast Small Office Administration

Before you begin the installation of Avast Small Office Administration please ensure that:

  • You are logged into Windows as an Administrator or as a user with administrator permissions (for instructions refer to the Windows help or documentation Microsoft's website),

  • Your machine is connected to the Internet and the network connection is working properly.

  • All other programs in Windows are closed and not running (for instructions refer to your vendor's documentation),

  • Your previous antivirus software is fully uninstalled (for instructions refer to your vendor's documentation),

...to prevent Avast Small Office Administration from being incorrectly installed or aborted unexpectedly.

Then download Avast Small Office Administration setup file from the Avast website for specific edition of Avast Endpoint Protection:

  Avast Endpoint Protection (Basic) Avast Endpoint Protection Plus Avast Endpoint Protection Suite Avast Endpoint Protection Suite Plus  
  setup_console_ep.exe setup_console_epp.exe setup_console_eps.exe setup_console_epsp.exe  

...and save it to your machine, in a location where you will easily be able to locate it. For example download Avast Small Office Administration setup file setup_console_epsp.exe for Avast Endpoint Protection Suite Plus and save it on your Windows Desktop.

When you are ready, proceed by following the installation steps:

Prerequisites Setup
  1. Locate the downloaded setup file setup_console_epsp.exe (depending on your system preferences, the file extension may be hidden), on your Windows Desktop for example. Now, if you are logged:

    • As a user with administrator permissions, right-click on the setup file and choose 'Run as administrator' from the context menu,

    • As an Administrator (i.e. not a user with administrator permissions), just double-click the setup file,

    ...and if prompted by the User Account Control dialog for permissions, click 'Yes' (or 'Continue') to begin the installation process.

  2. When installation starts, select the preferred language for the installation from the drop-down menu and click 'OK'.

  3. The Avast Small Office Administration Setup Wizard automatically determines the Prerequisites which need to be established in order to install and run Avast Small Office Administration. If some supplementary software is missing, click 'Next' to continue in getting and installing all necessary components to your system.

  4. Prerequisites applicable to your system will be selected automatically in the list on the next screen. You can change the selection using the checkboxes next to each supplementary software name in the list, but for most cases leaving it at the default should be adequate. Click 'Next' to invoke download and installation of all selected components to your system.

  5. The Avast Small Office Administration Setup Wizard will then display an installation progress. Depending upon the speed of your machine and the Internet connection, it may take some time to complete the prerequisites installation.

  6. Note:
    In the meantime, a dialog screens showing the prerequisites installation progress may popup and you might be asked to confirm the license agreement and complete the installation of the supplementary software, like for example Microsoft .NET Framework and Microsoft Silverlight.

    If prompted to restart the machine, click 'Restart Now' to reboot. It will prevent the rest of the installation from being aborted unexpectedly.

    Once the machine is restarted, Avast Small Office Administration Setup Wizard launches itself automatically during Windows startup.

  1. Once the prerequisites are installed and the machine is restarted, or if no prerequisites were identified, you will see the initial screen of the Avast Small Office Administration Setup Wizard where, you can click 'Quick Guide' to get more information about installation and usage of Avast Small Office Administration. To continue with the installation click 'Next'.

  2. You now need to confirm that you have read and accept the terms of the End-User License Agreement by selecting the option 'I accept the terms in the License Agreement'. Then click 'Next' to proceed.

  3. Depending on the Product License you have, select one of these two options on the next screen:

    • Insert license file - If you have already purchased a license for Avast Endpoint Protection, you can enter its location in the box shown on the screen. Firstly you have to save the license file License.avastlic, which was attached to the e-mail you received after purchase, somewhere on your machine where you can easily locate it, for example on your Windows Desktop.

      Then enter the full path to its destination directory on this screen,

      ...or you can click 'Browse...', and locate it by browsing your machine via the navigation dialog.

      After the installation is completed, you can continue to use the product for 12, 24, or 36 months from the date of purchase, depending on the purchased license period.

    • Request demo license (Requires Internet connection) - A time-limited demo license will be automatically downloaded during the installation.

      During the 30 day demo period you need to purchase and insert a valid license file to continue to use the product, otherwise the Avast Small Office Administration will not be able to communicate with any connected machines and you will not be able to deploy and manage the Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients) on your network after the demo period expires. For detailed instructions how to insert the license file please read the following article:


    When it's done click 'Next' to continue.

  4. Then Choose Setup Type that you prefer:

    • Recommended - Express installation using the most common setup configuration.

    • Expert - Advanced installation allowing to change the default setup configuration.


Recommended Setup Type
  1. Recommended setup type is an express installation of Avast Small Office Administration with the most common setting and minimal user interaction during the setup process. To continue with this type of installation just click the squared button besides the option 'Recommended'.

  2. In order to send various e-mail notifications from the Avast Small Office Administration, for example to deploy the Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients) remotely by e-mail or receive e-mail reports and system messages, you should enter the E-mail Configuration details of your SMTP Server on the next screen:

    • Administrator‘s e-mail - e-mail address to the network administrator or person responsible for managing the Avast Small Office Administration, like for example administrator@example.com, which should be primarily used to resend e-mail reports.

    • SMTP Server Address - Host Name or IP address of your outgoing e-mail server, like for example smtp.example.com or 192.168.1.25.

    • SMTP Server Port - Port number of your outgoing e-mail server, SMTP protocol uses TCP port number 25 by default.

    • From address - e-mail address that will appear in e-mail notifications sent by Avast Small Office Administration.

    • Use Authentication - if your outgoing e-mail server requires Username and Password authentication.

    • Use SSL - if your outgoing e-mail server requires encrypted connection over SSL protocol (Secure Sockets Layer).

    When it's done, click 'Next' to continue.

  3. You will be asked for a password which you will use later as the 'admin' user when logging on to the Avast Small Office Administration. You cannot use blank password and it must contain at least 6 alpha-numeric characters, so make sure it is a password that you will be able to remember. After you confirm a password choose whether you want to create shortcut icon on your Windows Desktop to open the Avast Small Office Administration straightly in default web browser and then click 'Next' to continue.

  4. Now, you will be ready to begin the installation. You can click 'Summary' to review your setup configuration before proceeding with the installation. If you missed something, just use the 'Back' button to go back and change the configuration. When you have finished the configuration click 'Install'.

  5. The Avast Small Office Administration Setup Wizard will then display an installation progress bar. Depending upon the speed of your machine and the Internet connection, it may take some time to complete the installation.

  6. When the installation is successfully completed, you will get a link which you can use later to open Avast Small Office Administration in your web browser. You can also choose whether you want to open it immediately in default web browser after exit the Avast Small Office Administration Setup Wizard. Then click 'Finish' to close the Avast Small Office Administration Setup Wizard.

Avast Small Office Administration should then be installed on your machine. The Avast Small Office Administration is accessible on the link displayed in the last step when the installation was successfully completed, so you can open it in your web browser, or double-click the shortcut icon on your Windows Desktop to open it straightly in default web browser.


Note:
Please use the link for Secure ecrypted connection while accessing Avast Small Office Administration from WAN (e.g. the Internet) or from untrusted LAN. Otherwise, for the access from trusted LAN or from the hosting server itself, you can use the link for Standard unecrypted connection.

Expert Setup Type
  1. Expert setup type is an advanced installation of Avast Small Office Administration which allows users to change the default setup configuration during the setup process. To continue with this type of installation just click the squared button besides the option 'Expert'.

  2. On the next screen you can change the default location of the Installation folder by entering a full path where you want to install the Avast Small Office Administration, or you can click 'Browse...' on the right, and locate the installation folder by browsing your machine via the navigation dialog. When the path is specified, or if you want to keep the default, click 'Next'.

  3. Then on the Mirror Configuration screen you can also change the default location of each mirror folder by entering a full path where you want to place it, or you can click 'Browse...' on the right side, and locate these folders by browsing your machine via the navigation dialog. When the locations are specified, or if you want to keep the defaults, click 'Next' to continue.

  4. If you have a direct connection to the Internet, you don't need to configure Proxy Settings on the next screen and just leave selected the default option 'Direct Connection (No Proxy)',

    ...otherwise you have to select the option 'Specify Proxy Server' and enter the necessary details about Proxy settings used to connect your machine to the Internet, i.e.:

    • Address - IP address or Host Name of your Proxy Server, like for example 192.168.1.10 or proxy.example.com.

    • Port - Port number of your server, like for example 3128.

    • Authentication - 'Basic Authentication (Plaintext)' or 'Windows integrated authentication (NTLM)' if your Proxy Server requires Username and Password.

    When it's done click 'Next' to continue.

  5. On the next screen you have to specify your Service Configuration.

    • Firstly choose whether you want to 'Log on as':

      • LocalService - an account which presents anonymous credentials on the network and has a minimum privileges on the local machine.

      • NetworkService - an account which acts as the computer on the network and has a minimum privileges on the local machine. It's used by default.

      ...or select 'This Account' to specify account with sufficient privileges to install and run the Avast Small Office Administration and its components.

    • Then if your system has more than one network connection, it is recommended to 'Select network adapter' (represented by IP address of current machine and connection name) which is connected to the network you want to manage using the Avast Small Office Administration.

      If necessary, you can also change default Port Numbers used to access the Avast Small Office Administration and manage Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients), i.e.:

      • Port for console - By default, port 8731 is used to access the Avast Small Office Administration over HTTP (unencrypted access).

      • Secure port for console - By default, port 8732 is used to access the Avast Small Office Administration over HTTPS (encrypted SSL access).

      • Port for clients - By default, port 25322 is used for communication among the Avast Small Office Administration and computers and/or servers when Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients) are deployed or managed.


    When it's done click 'Next' to continue.

  6. On the Database Configuration screen you can select preferred database type that will serve as data storage for all the policies, security settings and Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients) information:

    1. Use internal database - in such a case that you want to use embedded database that comes with Avast Small Office Administration which is also used as default for the Recommended Setup Type. Once you have selected this option click 'Next' to continue.

    2. Use custom SQL Server instance (Already up and running) - just if you want to use Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (or higher) which is already running on your or remote machine, and it also has a database for Avast Small Office Administration created.

      If you have selected this option, click 'Next' to display Custom SQL Server Configuration screen,

      ...where you will need to specify the other details:

      • SQL Server - type the Host Name of your SQL Server, for non-default instance followed by a backslash and the SQL Server Instance Name, i.e.:

        • HOSTNAME - if your SQL Server is running on the remote machine, or the same machine as the Avast Small Office Administration, and default SQL Server Instance Name is used (i.e. MSSQLSERVER).

        • (local) - as an alternative if your SQL Server is running locally on the same machine as the Avast Small Office Administration, and default SQL Server Instance Name is used (i.e. MSSQLSERVER).

        • HOSTNAME\INSTANCENAME - if your SQL Server is running on the remote machine, or the same machine as the Avast Small Office Administration, and any other than default SQL Server Instance Name is used (i.e. whatever, except MSSQLSERVER).

        • (local)\INSTANCENAME - as an alternative if your SQL Server is running on the same machine as the Avast Small Office Administration, and any other than default SQL Server Instance Name is used (i.e. whatever, except MSSQLSERVER).

        You can also click 'Search' to find all running SQL Servers within the range of your machine.

      • Authentication - select whether you want to login using:

        • Windows Integrated Authentication - your Windows account with unrestricted access to the Database Engine, specified at Service Configuration screen (step 11.).

        • SQL Server Authentication - your administrator credentials for the SQL Server.

      • Database Name - type the name of SQL Server database that you want to connect with Avast Small Office Administration (avast_sbc_db is used by default) and then click 'Test connection' to check if a database exists.

        Note:
        A completely new database can be created using the SQL Server Management Studio for example, included in all editions of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (or higher).

      When it's done, click 'Next' and you will be asked whether you wish clear all data from the specified database before using it. If you are connecting an existing database in SQL Server used by some previous instance of Avast Small Office Administration of exactly the same version, and want to keep all data storage for all the policies, security settings and Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients) information, click 'No'. Otherwise click 'Yes'.

  7.   11. When the installation is successfully completed, you will get a link which you can use later to open Avast Small Office Administration in your web browser. You can also choose whether you want to open it immediately in default web browser after exit the Avast Small Office Administration Setup Wizard. Then click 'Finish' to close the Avast Small Office Administration Setup Wizard.

Avast Small Office Administration should then be installed on your machine. The Avast Small Office Administration is accessible on the links displayed in the last step when the installation was successfully completed, so you can open it in your web browser, or double-click the shortcut icon on your Windows Desktop to open it straightly in default web browser.
