How to run an avast! GrimeFighter scan?

Important:

If you use avast! GrimeFighter as a standalone application, please follow these instructions:

The following system requirements are recommended in order to run avast! GrimeFighter:

  • Microsoft Windows 7 (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 or higher (any Edition excl. Starter Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit) or Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit).

  • Internet connection.

  • 512 MB RAM or above.

  • 256 MB minimum hard disk free space.

Notes:
Please be advised, that avast! GrimeFighter:

  • Does not run on any Apple Mac OS, or any other system which isn't specified as supported.

  • Is not supported by all graphics cards.

  • Does not support RAID. If a RAID controller is detected currently, avast! GrimeFighter does not run as a precaution to avoid breaking any RAID striping, potentially resulting in a loss of data.

  • Requires a constant Internet connection. If you’re having connection issues, try connecting to your router with an Ethernet cable for a more stable connection.

  • Support for Windows 8 / 8.1 is on our short term roadmap as we find a way around the system’s default encrypted disk setting which prevents us from successfully scanning your computer.


Scanning with avast! GrimeFighter

Important:

If you use avast! GrimeFighter as a standalone application, please follow these instructions:

Before you start your avast! GrimeFighter scan please ensure that:

  • You are logged in as a user with permissions to administrate your computer, otherwise you will be prompted to log in before attempting to run avast! GrimeFighter.

  • All other programs on your computer are closed and not running (for instructions refer to your vendor's documentation) as you will be asked to restart your computer and all existing open programs will be closed automatically.

  • avast! Antivirus 2014 is installed on your computer. For step-by-step instructions on how to download, install and open your version avast! Antivirus 2014 please read the following article:

When you are ready, you can continue by following these steps:

Starting an avast! GrimeFighter scan

Important:

If you use avast! GrimeFighter as a standalone application, please follow these instructions:

In order to start an avast! GrimeFighter scan please proceed as follows:

  1. Right-click on the avast! Antivirus 2014 orange ball icon in the system tray and select 'Open avast! user interface' from the menu,

  2. From the main menu, select ' Tools', and then click 'GrimeFighter'.

    Note:
    If you do not see a 'GrimeFighter' option upon opening avast! Antivirus 2014 user interface and selecting ' Tools', please check again in 5-10 minutes. If after 10 minutes you still do not see GrimeFighter as an option in your Tools panel and you meet all the system requirements, then avast! Antivirus 2014 has determined that your system is incompatible with running avast! GrimeFighter for other reasons. To find out why your system might not be compatible with avast! GrimeFighter please visit the following article:

  3. After selecting the 'GrimeFighter' option, you will receive a summarized report of all the grime that avast! GrimeFighter can remove in order to optimize your system. If you run avast! GrimeFighter for the first time on your computer, or after reinstalling Windows, you'll need to activate it by purchasing or verifying a license. Otherwise, after the avast! GrimeFighter has verified your license and completed the first scan, you can rescan your computer as many times as needed during your subscription period. Therefore, you can proceed in one of the following ways at this point:

    1. Purchasing avast! GrimeFighter on first time scan

    2. Activating avast! GrimeFighter with an existing license

    3. Running an avast! GrimeFighter rescan

  1. Purchasing avast! GrimeFighter on first time scan

    • If you run an avast! GrimeFighter scan for the first time on your computer, and you don't have a license yet, you'll need to purchase it. To do so, click 'Optimize My PC'.

    • Then choose a one, two or three year subscription for avast! GrimeFighter from the list of available options. Once you select a subscription, click 'Continue'.

    • This will take you to the Shopping cart in the AVAST Store where you can edit the selected subscription period, and decide whether or not you want to activate Auto-Renewal service. Then click 'Continue'.

    • In the Customer information selection of the shopping process, please fill in all your contact details and then select 'Continue'. If you are already a registered user of avast! Account, please fill in your registered e-mail address.

    • In the Payment selection of the shopping process, please select preferred payment method, fill in all the appropriate information and then select 'Complete your purchase'.

    • Upon the confirmation of payment information you will be taken to the Activation page. Click 'Optimize My PC' to continue to the next step (4).

  2. Activating avast! GrimeFighter with an existing license

    • If you are running an avast! GrimeFighter scan for the first time on your computer, or after reinstalling Windows, and you already have a valid license, you'll need to verify it. To do so, click 'Optimize My PC'.

    • Then select 'Do you already have a subscription?' right below the list of available subscription options.

    • 'Sign in' to your avast! Account using the credentials you provided during your avast! GrimeFighter purchase. If you don't know your password, click 'Forgot your password' and enter the e-mail you provided during your avast! GrimeFighter purchase to receive a link to reset your password.

    • This will show you your subscription details. Click 'Use this license' to activate avast! GrimeFighter.

    • Upon the activation of avast! GrimeFighter. Click 'Optimize My PC' to continue to the next step (4).

  3. Running an avast! GrimeFighter rescan

    • If you have already purchased or verified your license in avast! GrimeFighter during the first time scan, you can rescan your computer as needed during your subscription period. To repeat a scan, click 'Optimize My PC' to continue to the next step (4).

  1. Depending upon the speed of your Internet connection, it may take a few seconds whileavast! GrimeFighter downloads all the necessary files to sedate and scan your computer.

  2. When it's done, you will be asked to Restart your computer. Select 'Yes' and avast! GrimeFighter will reboot your system.

  3. Once your computer has been started in avast! GrimeFighter mode, click 'Begin GrimeFighter' to start your scan.

Depending on your computer’s hardware specs, avast! GrimeFighter may take anywhere from 30 minutes to a maximum of four hours. You might want to put the minions to work before you go to sleep. If for whatever reason you need to exit an avast! GrimeFighter scan prematurely, you will also find that you can return to Windows at any time by clicking the large cross symbol at the very right of the series of buttons in the top, right hand corner of your screen.


Settings options in avast! GrimeFighter

Once your computer has been started in avast! GrimeFighter mode, you can find your Settings options by clicking the gear icon in the top, right-hand corner of your screen.

The following settings are available:

  • Language - on this tab you can set the avast! GrimeFighter user interface to the language of your choice.

  • Keyboard - here you can set your keyboard layout in avast! GrimeFighter to the language of your choice.

  • Options - here you can choose whether avast! GrimeFighter should automatically reboot back into Windows or shutdown your computer once your scan is complete.

Browsing the Internet in avast! GrimeFighter

Once your computer has been started in avast! GrimeFighter mode, you can also browse the Internet:

  1. Click on the globe-like icon in the top, right corner of your screen and you will be directed to a new Web browser tab.

  2. To return to monitoring the progress of your scan, click on the icon of Officer Pete and you will exit the Web browser window (don’t worry, your tabs will be saved) and return to the original avast! GrimeFighter interface.

Note:
avast! GrimeFighter does not support Flash, so you will not be able to watch view YouTube or Netflix videos during your scan.


Browsing individual functions of avast! GrimeFighter during scan

avast! GrimeFighter consists of a virtual team about a dozen minions who personify the many technical aspects of cleaning and optimizing your computer. To find out what individual functions each minion performs, you can browse through their character profiles after you begin your avast! GrimeFighter scan by clicking on the right or left-pointing arrows on the corresponding sides of your screen.

Cleaning the system in avast! GrimeFighter

Upon the completion of an avast! GrimeFighter scan, you will be prompted to clean things up automatically or, optionally, to modify the recommended changes before performing the final system cleanup:

  1. If you want to accept all recommended changes to your computer, click 'Clean My System'.

  2. Otherwise, if you want to check and modify the recommended changes before performing the final system cleanup, click 'Review and Edit Changes',

    ...and this will take you to the list of all the unnecessary files which are slowing down your computer. Here you can easily set which action you want to apply for each item, one by one. If you are not sure about your settings, you can always get the original values back by clicking 'Reset to Default Changes'. When it's ready, click 'Apply Changes' and then 'Clean My System'.

Summarizing avast! GrimeFighter scan results

Upon the completion of an avast! GrimeFighter system cleanup you will be directed to your final report, which not only signifies the completion of a scan, but also provides an easy to read summary of what was done to improve your computer’s security, performance and privacy.

The Karma value for each category is a rough numerical representation of how much grime the minions found and removed from your system. For now, this is the extent to which avast! GrimeFighter notes changes made during your scan. When you have familiarized yourself with the changes, you can click 'Return to Windows' to restart your computer and get back into Windows.

Karma in avast! GrimeFighter

Karma is a rough numerical representation of how much grime the minions find and remove from your system. Grime means the unnecessary and sometimes malicious files that slow down your computer. Karma can also be based on the duration of your scan, and information that helps to improve our cloud engine.
