What are the system requirements for avast! Antivirus 8.x for Mac?

The system requirements for avast! Pro Antivirus 8.x for Mac and avast! Free Antivirus 8.x for Mac, are the following:

  • Apple Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), Apple Mac OS X 10.7.x (Lion), Apple Mac OS X 10.8.x (Mountain Lion) and Apple Mac OS X 10.9.x (Mavericks).

  • Intel based Mac computer with 64-bit processor.

  • 512 MB RAM or above (1 GB RAM or higher preferred).

  • 256 MB minimum hard disk free space.

  • Internet connection (to download and register the product, for automatic updates of the program and antivirus database).

  • Optimally standard screen resolution not less than 1024 x 768 pixels.

Note:
avast! Pro Antivirus 8.x for Mac will not run properly if you have any other antivirus software installed.

Uninstallation of avast! Antivirus 8.x for Mac must be carried out from the application's Menu bar. Click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast!' to open avast! user interface. Then click 'avast!' in the Menu bar on the top-left of the screen, select 'Uninstall avast!', and when asked click 'Uninstall' to confirm the uninstallation.

After receiving e-mail with your license file, save the attached License.avastlic somewhere on your Mac where you can easily locate it. Once you have downloaded and installed avast! Pro Antivirus 8.x for Mac, click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast!' to open avast! user interface. Then select 'Subscription' from the MAINTENANCE section and click the 'Insert license file' button. A dialog window will open where you can browse your Mac to locate your license file. Once you have located it, open it and then confirm its insertion into the program.

avast! Pro Antivirus 8.x for Mac can now continue to be used for 12, 24, or 36 months, depending on the purchased license, and you will continue to receive automatic updates to both the program and your virus definitions. At the end of that time, it will be necessary simply to purchase and insert a new license key.

How to register avast! Free Antivirus 8.x for Mac?

Once you have downloaded and installed avast! Free Antivirus 8.x for Mac, click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast!' to open avast! user interface. Then select 'Registration' from the MAINTENANCE section and click the 'Register now' button. Then click 'REGISTER YOUR SOFTWARE' in an opened window to display avast! Registration screen.

Pro Antivirus 8.x for Mac can be purchased through avast! Resellers only.

Note:
avast! Pro Antivirus 8.x for Mac doesn't support remote management over the network as well as avast! Free Antivirus 8.x for Mac.


How to check what version of avast! Antivirus 8.x for Mac is installed?

For information about installed version of avast! Antivirus 8.x for Mac click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast!' to open avast! user interface. Then select 'Status' from the OVERVIEW section (if not already selected) and you will see your Application version and Virus definition version on the right.


How to add files and directories to the exclusions in avast! Antivirus 8.x for Mac?

If you want to exclude certain files or directories to prevent them from scanning by avast! Antivirus 8.x for Mac, you can set it up in the File System Shield preferences. Click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast! Preferences'. On the bottom-left corner of the displayed screen with avast! Preferences click the lock icon to allow changes (unlock it). Then switch to the 'Shields' section (if not already displayed) on the top-left corner and next to the File System Shield click the 'Advanced...' button. Now, you can click '+' (plus) button to add any file and/or directory to the Exclusions list. If you want to remove some file and/or directory from the Exclusions list, just select it's entry in the list and click '-' (minus) button. When finished, click 'Done' for the changes to take effect.


Warning messages are displayed in a scan results. What does it mean?

Warning messages in a scan results don't warn you about infection. It's just innocent explanation why the scan wasn't possible as thoroughly as intended for the file (e.g. encrypted ZIP archive, system files in use, etc.).


I cannot send and receive any e-mail messages. What can I do?

In order to get your e-mail working again, you can try to disable IPV6 in Mail Shield preferences. Click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast! Preferences'. On the bottom-left corner of the displayed screen with avast! Preferences click the lock icon to allow changes (unlock it). Then switch to the 'Shields' section (if not already displayed) on the top-left corner and next to the Mail Shield click the 'Advanced...' button. Now, click the 'General' tab and then uncheck the 'Enable IPv6" option.
