What are the system requirements for avast! Antivirus 9.x for Mac?

The system requirements for avast! Pro Antivirus 9.x for Mac and avast! Free Antivirus 9.x for Mac, are the following:

  • Apple Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), Apple Mac OS X 10.7.x (Lion), Apple Mac OS X 10.8.x (Mountain Lion) or Apple Mac OS X 10.9.x (Mavericks).

  • Intel based Mac computer with 64-bit processor.

  • 512 MB RAM or above (1 GB RAM or higher preferred).

  • 256 MB minimum hard disk free space.

  • Internet connection (to download and register the product, for automatic updates of the program and virus database).

  • Optimally standard screen resolution not less than 1024 x 768 pixels.

Note:
avast! Antivirus 9.x for Mac will not run properly if you have any other antivirus software installed.

How to install avast! Antivirus 9.x for Mac

After downloading avast! Pro Antivirus 9.x for Mac or avast! Free Antivirus 9.x for Mac on your computer running Mac OS X (10.6.8 or higher), double-click the downloaded file 'avast_..._antivirus_mac_setup.dmg'. In the new window double-click on 'avast!.pkg' file and follow the instructions on the displayed window ( read AVAST End User License Agreement, click 'Agree', and then click 'Install' to complete the installation then press 'Close'. Now you can run avast! Antivirus 9.x for Mac.


How to uninstall avast! Antivirus 9.x for Mac

Uninstallation of avast! Antivirus 9.x for Mac must be carried out from the application's Menu bar. Click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast!' to open avast! user interface. Then click 'avast!' in the Menu bar on the top-left of the screen, select 'Uninstall avast!', and when asked click 'Uninstall avast!' to confirm the uninstallation.

After receiving e-mail with your license file, save the attached License.avastlic somewhere on your Mac where you can easily locate it. Once you have downloaded and installed avast! Pro Antivirus 9.x for Mac, click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast!' to open avast! user interface. Then click 'Insert license file' button on 'Status' tab. A dialog window will open where you can browse your Mac to locate your license file. Once you have located the file, open it and confirm its insertion into the program.

avast! Pro Antivirus 9.x for Mac can now be used for 12, 24, or 36 months, depending on the purchased license, and you will continue to receive automatic updates to both the program and your virus definitions. At the end of the subscription period you must purchase a renewal and insert a new license key.

Once you have downloaded and installed avast! Free Antivirus 9.x for Mac, click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast!' to open the avast! user interface, then select the 'My Devices' tab.

  • If you already have an avast! Account, just enter Your e-mail address and Password and click 'Sign in'.

  • If you have not registered for an avast! Account yet, click Create account now (at the bottom), enter Your e-mail address (must be valid) and create a Password for your avast! Account, and click 'Create account now'.

Pro Antivirus 9.x for Mac is licensed for commercial use by business customers while avast! Free Antivirus 9.x for Mac is licensed only for personal and non-commercial use. avast! Pro Antivirus 9.x for Mac can be purchased through avast! Resellers only.

avast! Pro Antivirus 9.x for Mac as well as avast! Free Antivirus 9.x for Mac cannot be remotely managed over a network.


How to check which version of avast! Antivirus 9.x for Mac is installed

For information about the installed version of avast! Antivirus 9.x for Mac click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast!' to open the avast! user interface. Then click 'avast!' in the Menu bar on the top-left of the screen and select About avast! antivirus. A new window will open and you can see your Application version and Virus definition version on the right.


How to add files and directories to the exclusions in avast! Antivirus 9.x for Mac

If you want to exclude certain files or directories from scanning by avast! Antivirus 9.x for Mac, you can set it up in the File System Shield preferences. Click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast!' to open the avast! user interface. Then click 'avast!' in the Menu bar on the top-left of the screen, and select ‘Preferences…'. On the bottom-left corner of the displayed screen with avast! Preferences click the lock icon to allow changes (unlock it). Then switch to the 'Shields' section (if not already displayed) in the top-left corner and in the section for File System Shield click 'Advanced...'. Now you can click the '+' (plus/add) button to add any file and/or directory to the Exclusions list. If you want to remove a file and/or directory from the Exclusions list, just select it in the list and click the '-' (minus/remove) button. When finished, click 'Done' for the changes to take effect.


Status message "Unable to scan" is displayed in scan results. What does it mean?

Thi is just an innocent explanation of why the scan wasn't possible as thoroughly as intended for the file (e.g. encrypted ZIP archive, system files in use, etc.). If you want to see details, just open a scan report and then right-click in the scan results window. Then choose ‘Non-scanned’. Now you can see the filenames and paths to files marked "Unable to scan".


I cannot send or receive any e-mail messages. What can I do?

In order to get your e-mail working again, you can try to disable IPv6 in Mail Shield preferences. Click the avast! Menu bar icon on the top-right of the screen and select 'Open avast!' to open the avast! user interface. Then click 'avast!' in the Menu bar on the top-left of the screen and select ‘Preferences…'. On the bottom-left corner of the displayed screen with avast! Preferences click the lock icon to allow changes (unlock it). Then switch to the 'Shields' section (if not already displayed) on the top-left corner and in the section for Mail Shield click 'Advanced...'. Now, click the 'General' tab and then uncheck the 'Enable IPv6' option.
