Download and Installation

You can install and run Cleanup on any device running Android operating systems 4.1 and higher.
Wi-Fi Finder cannot be downloaded or installed on non-Android operating systems, including the following operating systems:
- Microsoft Windows Phone
If you are using a custom ROM, the app may not work as expected. Please report any feedback regarding this issue through our support pages.
How can I download and install Cleanup?
Cleanup is available for Android devices from Google Play.
Cleanup is now installed and ready to use. The app is only available in a free version so you do not need a license to activate it.
How can I uninstall Cleanup?
You can uninstall Cleanup in Google Play:
- Open Google Play from the Apps screen of your device and search for Avast Cleanup.
- Tap Avast Cleanup & Boost to open the app information page.
- Tap Uninstall, then tap OK to confirm the uninstallation.
Cleanup is no longer installed on your device.
Cleanup removed some files that I wanted to keep. How is that possible?
During an Advanced Cleaning, you can release storage space on your device by removing unwanted applications, media, files, and app data. For media and files, you also have the option to transfer them to your cloud storage. All deletions and cloud transfers are performed manually and you are asked to review items before confirming their removal from your device. Unwanted removal during a Safe Clean is very rare as the app is designed to only remove residual items and dispensable caches that waste space and are unnecessary to the performance of your device.
What types of files are processed during a Safe Clean and can I customize them?
The following types of files are scanned during a Safe clean:
- Hidden Cache
- Visible Cache
- Residual files
- Shared Cache
You can hide any of these categories that you do not want Safe clean to process. Tap the menu icon in the upper-right corner of the user-interface, tap Settings, then tap Safe cleaning. On the next screen you can tick or untick the file types according to your preferences. By default, all types are marked for Safe clean processing except Thumbnails.
Can I specify the exact files that I want to delete?
To specify the files that you want to delete during a Safe clean, ensure that the Safe Clean Check option is turned on in your Safe cleaning settings. When this option is on, a list of the items identified for deletion appears each time you perform a Safe clean. You can untick items that you do not want to delete before completing the clean in all categories except for Hidden Cache, which can be cleaned all at once or not at all.
To turn the Safe Clean Check option on, tap the menu icon in the upper-right corner of the Safe Clean interface, tap Settings, tap Safe cleaning, then turn the Safe Clean Check option on, at the top of the list.
Why is the scan running slowly or paused mid-progress?
During a scan, Cleanup probes several folder-levels deep to identify all dispensable data on your device. Depending on the number of items Cleanup needs to scan, and the computing power of your device, a scan may take several seconds to a number of minutes. If the scanner encounters a particularly complex folder, a notification is displayed in the scanner progress bar. To provide feedback about unusually long scan processing times, please use the in-app Feedback form.
Why is there no RAM booster in Cleanup?
Cleanup is designed to address device storage issues. Because storage space is only marginally improved by RAM cleaning on most devices, and Android systems are designed to manage RAM autonomously, Cleanup focuses on other methods of device cleaning.
Why does Avast show advertisements in mobile apps?
Avast is pleased to offer the Cleanup app to customers for free, and are confident that you will find the app to be highly advantageous to the performance of your device. To support the ongoing development of the app, we allow ads only at the end of each cleaning process which we believe to be unobtrusive, and that do not interfere with app usage.
What is the Safe Clean option?
Safe Clean is an automated action that cleans dispensable files. You can define the exact types of items that are cleaned in Settings.
How can I be sure that no valuables are deleted during a Safe Clean?
Safe Clean is carefully designed to only remove data that is truly dispensable such as system caches that are easily replaced, or already installed APK files.
Is it possible to check the files that Safe Clean identifies for deletion before the clean is completed?
Yes. To review items that are identified by Safe Clean for deletion, tick Safe clean review in Settings. Each time that you run a Safe Clean, an overview of all items is displayed before you perform the deletion.
Why does the Safe Clean button show such a low amount of removable space?
If you have recently run a Safe clean, the amount may be low because your apps have not created more dispensable data yet. Another reason may be that some of your Safe Clean categories are unchecked and therefore ignored when the clean is run. Check the categories in the Safe cleaning section of Settings, if you are concerned.
Why is the Thumbnails category turned off by default?
Thumbnails are the small versions of pictures used for previews. Deleting thumbnails can release significant amounts of data on some devices while on others, the effect is very limited. For this reason, this category is unchecked by default, so that you can test the effectiveness of this option on your device and decide whether to check it or not.
In the About application section of the app, What does Scanner updated relate to?
The Cleanup scanner is regularly updated to ensure that the app is as effective as possible. When improvements are made, the scanner configuration is automatically updated on your device (with a super-tiny download), and the date is reflected in the Scanner updated section of the About application screen.
What is the Advanced cleaning option?
The Advanced cleaning feature organizes your stored items into the following categories:
- App data
You can sort and group each category using specific parameters such as usage, type, and date, to make identifying unnecessary items easier. In Advanced cleaning, you can remove the files that you deem unnecessary one-by-one, or, select an entire group and apply an action to several files at once.
If you delete an App Data file, all data related to the selected application, including the custom settings or OBB files related to the additional features bought on Google Play, are deleted. After you delete these files, the application runs in default configuration with no additional features.
What is included in the Applications category?
The Applications category includes the applications that you installed on your device and their downloaded data. Pre-installed device applications are not included.
What images, video and audio files are included in the Media category?
All images, videos, and audio files that are created on your device, downloaded from the Internet or maintained by a common application are included in the Media category.
What file types are included in the Files category?
The Files category includes various types of documents such as PDFs, spreadsheets, and presentations, as well as archives (for example, ZIP files), HTML files, and residual APK files.
What is included in the App Data category, and what is the effect of deleting such items on the source app?
In the App Data category, you can delete unnecessary data that is accumulated when you use certain common apps. For example, if you use the offline map functionality of Google Maps, you can usually clean this data from your device safely.
We recommend that you delete items from the App Data category with caution and always consider the impact of removing the App Data on the functionality of the source app.
The effect of deleting items in the App Data category varies depending on the functionality of the source app. For example, when you reopen Google Maps, the app would re-download any offline maps that were removed by Cleanup. Similarly, Spotify would re-download offline tracks when needed.
Conversely, deleting OBB type App Data, which is often associated with large games, may release a lot of space on your device while allowing you to keep the game, but, you may need to reinstall or re-download the OBB file if you decide to continue the game.
You can also add individual App Data items to Safe Clean. To do so, tap the settings icon of the item that you want to add to Safe clean, then tap Add to Safe clean.
I do not see certain app caches in the App Data category. Why is that?
The items included in this category are limited to data from some of the most commonly used apps. These apps have been carefully analyzed and selected to be included, as deleting them is unlikely to cause issues with your device. Regardless, we recommend that you always use caution when deleting items from the App Data category.
How can I organize the views in each category of Advanced cleaning?
To reorganize the way items are displayed in a category (for example, Applications, Media, Files, and App Data), tap the menu icon in the screen of the specific category and select the way that you want to organize the items from the list of options that appears.
You can sort the items in each category in the following ways:
- Applications: usage, size, name
- Media: type, size, name, date
- Files: type, size, name, date
- App Data: size, name
For devices running Android 5 and later, you need to consent to a special permission in your device settings for Cleanup to be able to detect app usage.
Can I double check items that I add to the trash before deleting them?
Yes. To check the items that you select for deletion before permanently removing them from you’re your device, ensure that the Advanced cleaning review option is checked in Settings. From the Trash review screen, you can remove items from cleaning if you change your mind.
What cloud services are supported?
Cleanup supports Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive.
What item types can be added to a transfer queue?
You can add files from the Media and Files categories in Advanced cleaning.
How do I add an item to a transfer queue?
In the Media or Files categories in Advanced cleaning, select any items that you want to transfer and tap the cloud icon that appears.
Then, choose the connected cloud service that you want to transfer the items to. If your device is connected to the Internet (or Wi-Fi if you turned on Upload files only on Wi-Fi), the transfer starts immediately. You can access the transfer queue from the Advanced cleaning overview screen.
Can I keep copies of transferred files on my device?
Sure. Simply turn off the option to Delete files after transfer in the Cloud services section of Settings. This setting effects all connected cloud services.
How can I quickly find items after they are transferred to my cloud storage service?
To locate a file that you transferred to cloud storage, sign into your cloud storage service and access the relevant folder:
- In Dropbox: Avast Cleanup in the Apps folder
- In OneDrive or Google Drive: AvastCleanup folder
Your transferred items are organized in the same way that they were organized on your device.
How many cloud services can I connect to Cleanup?
You can connect to any number of Google Drive accounts simultaneously, and just one Dropbox and one OneDrive account at a time.
How can I disconnect a cloud service from Cleanup?
In the Cloud services section of Settings, tap the menu icon beside the account that you want to disconnect and tap Sign out.
Why does a file upload restart from the beginning after a transfer queue is paused?
Because incomplete file transfers are automatically deleted by cloud services when a transfer is paused, you can only pause and resume an entire queue.
Why did Cleanup fail to transfer an item?
The main reasons a file may not be transferred are:
- Poor quality or unavailability of an Internet connection.
- Unavailability of the cloud storage service.
- Insufficient space availability in your cloud storage account.
If you encounter a transfer fail, retry the transfer at a later time or with a different service.
What is Cleanup?
Avast Cleanup is a free application which replaces GrimeFighter. The app helps to improve the performance of your device and preserve your storage space by identifying and removing unnecessary files that may slow your device down.
How can I customize or disable the notifications I receive from Cleanup?
Mobile Cleanup provides the following types of notifications to remind you when your mobile device may need cleaning:
- Unused app(s) reminders
- Storage space warning
- Dispensable data reminder
- Media transfer reminder
If you do not want to see these warnings, or you want to customize them, you can do so in Settings.
Tap the menu icon in the upper-right corner, tap Settings, then tap the Notifications section, to open the Notifications screen where you can disable or change the conditions for receiving each notification.
Can I restore deleted files?
Restoring the files that you delete using Safe clean is not possible. We recommend that you review the files that you delete during an Advanced cleaning before you empty the trash to verify the deletion. After you empty the trash, the files are permanently deleted from your device.
You can back up the Media and Files that you delete from your device during an Advanced cleaning by transferring such items to your cloud storage account.
