Avast 2016: Windows does not detect Avast installation

Summary

The Action Center or Security Center in Windows reports that an antivirus software is not installed on the computer although Avast 2015 is installed and active.

The Action Center / Security Center acquires information about the current status of installed antivirus software by using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). If there is a problem in the WMI Repository, or the WMI service is not started, the Action Center then reports outdated or misleading information.

To resolve the issue you need to scan and repair the WMI Repository.

To scan and repair the WMI Repository:

Log into Windows as a user with administrator permissions.

  1. On Windows 10 Start Screen or Desktop, press Win + X keys simultaneously on your keyboard, select Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu displayed in the bottom left corner, ...and if prompted by the User Account Control dialogue for permission, click Yes.
  2. On Windows 8 / 8.1 Start Screen or Desktop, press Win + X keys simultaneously on your keyboard, select Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu displayed in the bottom left corner, ...and if prompted by the User Account Control dialogue for permission, click Yes.
  3. Open Command Prompt: In the Windows Start menu select All Programs or the Programs sub-menu. Select Accessories, then right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator from the context menu, ...and if prompted by the User Account Control dialogue for permissions, click YesContinue.
  4. Enter the command winmgmt /verifyrepository into the Command Prompt and press the Enter key to perform a consistency check of the WMI Repository.
If you receive the error message WMI repository verification failed... ...Access denied when running the above command, carefully repeat steps 1. - 2. listed above.
  5. You will receive the message WMI repository is consistent or WMI repository is inconsistent. Enter the command winmgmt /salvagerepository into the Command Prompt and press the Enter key, to rebuild the WMI Repository.
If you receive the message WMI repository is inconsistent or WMI repository salvage failed, run the command winmgmt /salvagerepository a second time.
  6. After you receive the message WMI repository is consistent in the output, restart your computer.
  1. Ensure that your Windows XP system has Service Pack 2 or higher installed. To check your current Service Pack version in the System Information utility:
    • Go to the Start menu and select All Programs or Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools and then click on System Information.
    • In the left column of the open window, select System Summary to view your system Version, including Service Pack if installed.

If needed download and install the latest Service Pack for Windows XP via Microsoft Windows Update or download the stand-alone package from the Microsoft Download Center. When you are sure that the latest Service Pack is installed, continue to the next steps.
  2. Go to the Start menu and select All Programs, then select Run....
  3. In the Run dialogue, copy and paste the following command:

    rundll32 wbemupgd, UpgradeRepository

    ...and click OK.
You will not receive any confirmation message, but the results are stored in the setup.log file located in the %windir%\system32\wbem \logs directory, i.e. C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\logs by default.
  4. Reboot your computer to save the changes.

Once the computer has restarted, the current status of the installed antivirus software is reported correctly in the Action Center.
