Introduction to Avast Small Office Administration

Avast Small Office Administration is a desktop console which manages Avast Endpoint Protection clients.

Avast Small Office Administration is suitable for simple computer networks with up to 200 computers and/or servers. It is simple to use and has one-level grouping of Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients).

  • 1 GB RAM or above (depending on requirements of installed operating system version and other 3rd party software installed)
  • 900 MB of free hard disk space
  • Optimally standard screen resolution not less than 1024 x 768 pixels
  • Avast Small Office Administration is not supported (is not compatible, cannot be installed and does not run) on DOS, Microsoft Windows 3.x, Microsoft Windows NT 3.x, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Windows 2000, or any other operating system which is not specified as supported.
  • Other 3rd party prerequisites are installed automatically during the setup if they are not present. These are Microsoft .NET Framework 4, Microsoft Silverlight 5 and other dependencies like Microsoft Windows Installer, etc.

Overview: How to install Avast Small Office Administration

Before you begin to install Avast Small Office Administration, ensure that:

  • You are logged in to Windows with administrator permissions.
  • Your machine is connected to the Internet and the network connection is working properly.
  • All other programs in Windows are closed.
  • Your previous antivirus software is fully uninstalled.

When all requirements are met, follow these steps:

Download Setup file

Download the Avast Enterprise Administration setup file from the Avast website for the appropriate edition of Avast Endpoint Protection:

...and save it to your computer (for example on your Windows Desktop).

Prerequisites Setup

  1. Right-click the downloaded setup file setup_console_....exe, choose Run as administrator from the context menu, ...and if prompted by the User Account Control dialog for permissions, click Yes (or Continue). The installation files are copied to your machine.
  2. The Avast Small Office Administration Setup wizard appears. Select your preferred language and click OK.
  3. The setup wizard automatically checks the Prerequisites to install and run Avast Small Office Administration. If supplementary software is missing, click Next to select components to install.
  4. Prerequisites applicable to your system are selected automatically. To change the selection, tick or untick the checkboxes next to items in the list. Click Next to install selected components. The Avast Small Office Administration Setup Wizard displays installation progress.
    You may be prompted to confirm the license agreement to complete installation of supplementary software, for example Microsoft .NET Framework and Microsoft Silverlight.

    If prompted to restart the machine, click Restart Now. This prevents Avast Small Office Administration installation from being aborted unexpectedly later. When the machine restarts, the setup wizard launches itself automatically.

Avast Small Office Administration Setup

  1. When the prerequisites are installed and the machine is restarted, or if no prerequisites were missing, the Avast Small Office Administration Setup wizard is displayed. Click Next to continue installation. Click Quick Guide for more information about Avast Small Office Administration.
  2. Confirm the terms of the End-User License Agreement by selecting the option I accept the terms in the License Agreement. Click Next to proceed.
  3. Select the appropriate license option:
    • Insert license file - If you already purchased a license for Avast Endpoint Protection, save the license file License.avastlic (attached to the confirmation e-mail sent after purchase) to your computer. For example, on your Windows Desktop. Enter the file path the folder where you saved it, ...or click Browse... to browse for the appropriate folder.
    • Request demo license (Requires Internet connection) - Download a temporary demo license during installation. During the 30 day demo period you need to purchase and insert a valid license file to continue to use the product. For details to insert the license file, read the following article:
    Click Next to continue.
  4. Select the appropriate setup type:
    • Recommended (see Preferred Method below) - Express installation using the default setup configuration.
    • Expert (see Alternative Method below) - Advanced installation allowing custom setup configuration.

Expert Setup Type

  1. Select Recommended setup for express installation of Avast Small Office Administration with default settings.
  2. Select Expert setup for advanced installation of Avast Small Office Administration allowing custom setup configuration.
  3. Select a Destination directory

    Enter the file path, or click the button Browse... on the right and browse for the appropriate folder. Click Next.
  4. Configure Mirror settings

    The Mirror is used to automatically distribute updates to all Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients) on your network. The advantage of using the Mirror is that the updates need to be downloaded only once from the AVAST update server, thus saving you bandwidth.

    Enter the file paths where you want to create mirror folders, or click Browse... on the right to browse for the appropriate folders. Click Next.
  5. Configure Internet settings

    Select either Direct Connection (No Proxy), ...or Specify proxy server with all the necessary details, i.e.:
    • Address - IP address or Host Name of your Proxy Server, e.g., 192.168.1.10 or proxy.example.com.
    • Port - Port number of your server, e.g., 3128.
    • Authentication - Basic Authentication (Plaintext) or Windows integrated authentication (NTLM) if your Proxy Server requires Username and Password.
    Click Next to continue.
  6. Specify your Service Configuration

    • Select an option to Log on as:
      • LocalService - An account which presents anonymous credentials on the network and has minimum privileges on the local machine.
      • NetworkService - An account which acts as the computer on the network and has minimum privileges on the local machine.
      ...or select This Account to specify an account with sufficient privileges to install and run the Avast Small Office Administration and its components. For more information about service user accounts please read documentation on the Microsoft website:
    • If your system has multiple network connections, it is recommended to Select network adapter (represented by the IP address of current machine and connection name) which is connected to the network you want to manage. If necessary, change default Port Numbers used to access Avast Small Office Administration and manage Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients), i.e.:
      • Port for console - By default, port 8731 is used to access Avast Small Office Administration over HTTP (unencrypted access).
      • Secure port for console - By default, port 8732 is used to access Avast Small Office Administration over HTTPS (encrypted SSL access).
      • Port for clients - By default, port 25322 is used for communication between Avast Small Office Administration and computers and/or servers when Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients) are deployed or managed.
    Click Next to continue.
  7. Database Configuration

    Select the database server to store data for policies, security settings, and Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients) information:
    1. Use internal database - Use the embedded database included with Avast Small Office Administration and click Next to continue.
    2. Use custom SQL Server instance (Already up and running) - Use Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (or higher) which is already running on your machine, with database for Avast Small Office Administration created. Click Next to display Custom SQL Server Configuration, ...and specify the required details:
      • SQL Server - type the Host Name of your SQL Server, for non-default instance followed by a backslash and the SQL Server Instance Name, i.e.:
        • HOSTNAME - if your SQL Server is running on the remote machine, or the same machine as the Avast Small Office Administration, and default SQL Server Instance Name is used (i.e. MSSQLSERVER).
        • (local) - as an alternative if your SQL Server is running locally on the same machine as the Avast Small Office Administration, and default SQL Server Instance Name is used (i.e. MSSQLSERVER).
        • HOSTNAME\INSTANCENAME - if your SQL Server is running on the remote machine, or the same machine as the Avast Small Office Administration, and anything other than default SQL Server Instance Name is used (i.e. not MSSQLSERVER).
        • (local)\INSTANCENAME - as an alternative if your SQL Server is running on the same machine as the Avast Small Office Administration, and anything other than default SQL Server Instance Name is used (i.e. not MSSQLSERVER).
        Click Search to locate SQL Servers within range of your machine.
      • Authentication - select whether you want to login using:
        • Windows Integrated Authentication - your Windows account with unrestricted access to the Database Engine, previously specified in Service Configuration .
        • SQL Server Authentication - your administrator credentials for the SQL Server.
      • Database Name - Enter the name of SQL Server database that you want to connect with Avast Small Office Administration (avast_sbc_db is used by default) and click Test connection to check if a database exists.
        You can also create a new database using SQL Server Management Studio, included with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (or higher).
      Click Next.

      You are asked if you want to clear all data from the specified database before using it. If you are connecting an existing database in SQL Server used by a previous instance of the same version of Avast Small Office Administration, and want to keep all data storage for all the policies, security settings and Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients) information, click No.

      Otherwise click Yes.
  8. E-mail Configuration

    Enter details of your SMTP Server to enable various e-mail notifications from the Avast Small Office Administration, for example to deploy the Avast Endpoint Protection clients (managed clients) remotely by e-mail or receive e-mail reports and system messages.
    • Administrator‘s e-mail - E-mail address to the network administrator or person responsible for managing the Avast Small Office Administration, like for example administrator@example.com, which should be primarily used to resend e-mail reports.
    • SMTP Server Address - Host Name or IP address of your outgoing e-mail server, like for example smtp.example.com or 192.168.1.25.
    • SMTP Server Port - Port number of your outgoing e-mail server, SMTP protocol uses TCP port number 25 by default.
    • From address - E-mail address that will appear in e-mail notifications sent by Avast Small Office Administration.
    • Use Authentication - If your outgoing e-mail server requires Username and Password authentication.
    • Use SSL - If your outgoing e-mail server requires encrypted connection over SSL protocol (Secure Sockets Layer).
    Click Next to continue.
  9. Create a password for the admin user to login to Avast Small Office Administration. The password must contain at least 6 alpha-numeric characters.

    Select whether or not to create a shortcut icon on your Windows Desktop. Click Next to continue.
  10. Click Summary to review your setup configuration before installation. Use the Back button to return to a previous screen and change the configuration. When configuration is ready, click Install. The Avast Small Office Administration Setup wizard displays installation progress.
  11. When the installation is complete, a link is displayed to open Avast Small Office Administration in your web browser. Click Finish to close the Avast Small Office Administration Setup wizard.

Avast Small Office Administration is then installed on your machine. Double-click the shortcut icon on your Windows Desktop to open it in your web browser, or use the web address linked in the final step of setup.

Use the link for Secure encrypted connection while accessing Avast Small Office Administration from WAN (e.g. the Internet) or from untrusted LAN. When accessing from trusted LAN or from the hosting server itself, use the link for Standard unencrypted connection.
