How to uninstall Avast 2016 using the Uninstall Utility

The Avast Uninstall Utility is a tool which removes Avast 2016 completely from your computer while running Windows in Safe Mode.

This is the preferred uninstallation method as it is the most reliable and removes all program files, allowing you to make a clean installation of Avast. If for some reason you prefer not to use this method, in most cases you can remove Avast via the Windows Control Panel. For instructions please read the following article:

Before you begin, make sure you are logged into Windows with administrator permissions and no other programs are running.

  1. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility from the link below: ...and save the file avastclear.exe to your Windows Desktop.
    For computers based on old processors without SSE2 support, download this file:
  2. Start Windows in Safe Mode according to the instructions on the Windows or Avast support pages:
    If you try to run the avastclear.exe while not in Safe Mode, the Avast Uninstall Utility prompts you to restart in Safe Mode automatically.
  3. With Windows running in Safe Mode, run the file avastclear.exe.
  4. On the Avast Uninstall Utility screen, select the location of Avast program files, select the product edition to uninstall, and click Continue.
  5. A progress bar shows the uninstallation progress. Keep the window open until the uninstallation is complete.
  6. Click Restart computer on the confirmation screen when the uninstallation is complete.

When the computer is restarted Avast 2016 is fully removed.

Please follow the detailed steps below to uninstall Avast 2016 from your computer.

  1. Right-click the link below, and select Save link as... or Save target as... to download the Avast Uninstall Utility: ...and save the file avastclear.exe to your Windows Desktop.

  2. To use the tool, start Windows in Safe Mode and follow the instructions on the Windows or Avast support pages:
    When you run avastclear.exe in normal Windows mode, the Avast Uninstall Utility prompts you to restart in your system Safe Mode.
  3. With Windows running in Safe Mode, right-click the downloaded file avastclear.exe, and choose Run as administrator from the context menu to execute the Avast Uninstall Utility.
  4. On the Avast Uninstall Utility screen, find the location of Avast program files (the default installation destination is automatically selected). Then select the product edition to uninstall from the drop-down menu and click Continue.
  5. A progress bar shows the uninstallation status. Keep the window open until the uninstallation is complete.
  6. When the uninstallation is complete a confirmation screen appears. You must restart your computer for all the program files to be removed completely. Click Restart computer to reboot immediately, or select Restart later to defer rebooting.

When the computer restarts, Avast 2016 is completely removed from your computer.
