Avast 2016: Testing whether Avast Antivirus protects your computer against malware

How to test if Avast Antivirus protects your computer against malware

Some types of malware attempt to disable your antivirus protection. To verify that Avast Antivirus is working properly on your computer, you can use EICAR Standard Anti-Virus Test File.

Testing Webshield

Avast Antivirus Web Shield protects your system from malware while you use the internet (browsing, downloading files, etc.) If malware is detected while downloading a file from the Internet, the download is stopped to prevent the threat from reaching your computer. To verify that Web Shield is working properly:

  1. Go to the EICAR website, and proceed to the download page: http://www.eicar.org/85-)-Download.html
  2. Scroll down to the section entitled Download area using the standard protocol http and click the link eicar.com to initiate the EICAR Standard Antivirus Test File Download.
  3. An alert message pop-up appears above the Avast orange-ball icon in your system tray with the text: Threat Blocked (Infection: EICAR test- not virus!!!), which indicates that Avast real-time protection is working on your computer.

Testing File System Shield

The File System Shield in Avast Antivirus checks any programs the moment they are started, and files the moment they are opened, saved, or copied. If anything suspicious is detected, it stops the program from starting, or the file from being opened, saved or copied, to prevent any damage to your computer and data. To verify if File System Shield is working properly:

  1. Temporarily disable Web Shield (Stop for 10 minutes), by following the instructions in the article below:
Web Shield should automatically turn on after 10 minutes. If the EICAR test finishes before 10 minutes, navigate back to Active Protection and click OFF next to Web Shield. The button returns to blue and Web Shield is turned back on.
  2. Go to the EICAR website, and proceed to the download page: http://www.eicar.org/85-)-Download.html
  3. Scroll down to the section entitled Download area using the secure, SSL enabled protocol https and click the link eicar.com to initiate the EICAR Standard Anti-Virus Test File download via secured HTTPS.
  4. An alert pop-up message appears above the Avast orange-ball icon with the text Threat Blocked, which indicates that Avast 2016 real-time protection is working properly on your computer.
